Divorce rates were rising, birthrates falling, and women were entering the increasingly industrialized and urbanized workforce in larger numbers than ever before, while Victorian morals and manners began to break down in the wake of the first sexual revolution.Vivien Green Fryd argues that this crisis played a crucial role in the lives and works of two of America's most familiar and beloved artists, Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) and Edward Hopper (1882-1967). Combining biographical study of their marriages with formal and iconographical analysis of their works, Fryd shows how both artists expressed the pleasures and perils of their relationships in their paintings. i shoulda recognized what it is by its title. it's a phd dissertation masquerading as a book. academic writing is not writing; it's tedium studded with citations. you can understand why artists ignore these tracts about their work. i enjoy the quality of the prints and appreciate having them between covers, but that's as far as it goes. i find nothing compelling about the thesis that the works of hopper & o'keeffe reflect anything about the state of marriage toward the middle of the last century. but i ordered it because goddammit i'm a sucker for hopper and can't help myself. i could curl up in his work and never come out. maybe that's what i've gone and done.
